Materials & Construction

KarolShoes footwear is made from carefully selected natural cowhide leather, chosen for the specific model, shape, finish and intended use. We work with several leather types, including Crazy Horse, Kabir-type leather, Crust leather, nubuck and smooth full-grain leather.

Our footwear is made for everyday use, city wear, motorcycle-inspired style, casual outfits and handcrafted leather wardrobes. The leather matters, but the full construction matters just as much: leather upper, leather lining, leather insole, carefully selected soles and a durable bond based on modern technical adhesives.

The foundation of a good pair

Leather upper The external part of the shoe is made from natural leather selected for the style, structure and function of each model.
Leather interior Leather lining and leather insole create a more natural contact with the foot and a higher standard of everyday wear.
Model-specific soles The sole is selected for the character of the model — from lighter Derby shoes to stronger biker and ankle boot silhouettes.
Modern cemented construction A durable, flexible and stable connection between upper and sole, designed for real everyday use.
Natural cowhide leather Durable, flexible, breathable and made to age with character. Natural leather works with the foot and changes over time.
Handmade in Poland Each pair passes through human hands: leather preparation, cutting, stitching, lasting, finishing and final inspection.
Construction with purpose A motorcycle-inspired boot, a Derby shoe, a women’s ankle boot, a sandal and a slide all need different materials, proportions and soles.

Why we use natural leather

Natural leather has character, durability and the ability to work with the foot. It is not a flat, plastic-looking and lifeless material. It has structure, tension, texture and its own reaction to wear.

Good leather does not lose meaning with time — it matures. Patina, creases, subtle darkening, lighter marks and signs of use are part of how real leather develops. This is why handmade leather footwear does not look like a disposable product from a production line.

In KarolShoes footwear, natural leather works throughout the construction: on the upper, inside the shoe and in the insole. This gives better comfort, a better feel and a more premium experience during everyday use.

Small differences are part of the craft

Subtle differences in shade, texture, hand-finished marks and leather grain are normal features of natural leather. Each pair is handmade, so it will not look like an identical copy from a mass-production mold.

This is not a defect. It is a sign that the footwear was made from a real material and passed through a real craft process.

Leather types used by KarolShoes

We select leather according to the model, color, construction and desired final character of the pair. A rugged biker boot needs a different leather than a smart casual Derby shoe, a women’s ankle boot, a sandal or a leather slide.

Crazy Horse leather used in handmade KarolShoes leather boots

Crazy Horse leather

Crazy Horse is a waxed natural leather with a raw, rugged character. It handles everyday use well, develops patina quickly and visibly shows the natural movement of the material. Creases, lighter marks and scuffs are part of its look. It is especially well suited to biker, workwear, military-inspired and ankle boot models.

Kabir-type hand-finished leather used in KarolShoes handmade footwear

Kabir-type leather

Kabir-type leather has a hand-finished, rubbed effect with a stronger, slightly aged appearance. It creates individual tonal transitions and a more artisanal surface. Each pair made from this type of leather may vary slightly in shade and finish, which emphasizes its handmade character.

Crust leather used for hand-colored and hand-finished KarolShoes footwear

Crust leather

Crust leather allows us to create deeper, layered color effects. It works well with hand coloring, brushing and polishing. The final look is more alive than a flat factory color and can show subtle depth across the surface of the shoe.

Natural nubuck leather used in selected KarolShoes casual footwear

Nubuck

Nubuck is a natural leather with a matte, velvety surface. It has a calmer and more casual character. It requires regular protection and proper care, but it works very well in less formal everyday models.

Smooth full-grain leather used in classic KarolShoes leather shoes

Smooth leather

Smooth leather has a cleaner, more classic surface. It is versatile, elegant and easier to care for in everyday use. It works well in Derby shoes, ankle boots, Chelsea-inspired models and smart casual silhouettes.

Leather lining and leather insole inside KarolShoes handmade leather footwear

Leather inside the shoe

Leather also works inside KarolShoes footwear. A leather lining and leather insole improve comfort, increase the feeling of quality and create a more natural environment for the foot than a synthetic interior.

Construction should be strong, not theatrical

A good shoe does not need a construction chosen only for marketing language. It needs construction selected for the model, leather, sole and way of use. KarolShoes footwear is built to be stable, comfortable, durable and consistent with the character of each silhouette.

Soles and technical construction

The sole determines how a shoe stands, moves, looks and handles everyday wear. This is why KarolShoes soles are selected for the specific model, not forced into one universal formula.

Motorcycle-inspired boots, biker boots, military-style boots and leather ankle boots use stronger soles for stability, a more expressive silhouette and better resistance in everyday use. Derby shoes require a lighter line, more flexibility and proportions suitable for casual or smart casual outfits. Sandals and slides need freedom, lightness and comfort for warm days.

We use soles selected for the model’s character, usually based on rubber or technical sole compounds. These solutions combine grip, abrasion resistance, stability and the correct profile of the shoe.

One sole for everything is a weak solution

A motorcycle-inspired boot should not have the same construction as a light Derby shoe. A sandal does not need the same sole as a heavy ankle boot. Each model has a different purpose, mass, line and set of technical requirements.

That is why we choose the sole for the shoe. This gives a better technical result, better visual proportion and better durability in real use.

Modern cemented sole construction

In most KarolShoes models, we use a strong cemented sole construction based on modern technical adhesives used in professional footwear manufacturing. This construction is designed for real use: walking, flexing, leather movement, tension and daily load.

The strength of this technology comes from connecting the upper and sole across a large surface area. Instead of creating only a narrow line of stress, the construction works more broadly and more evenly. This creates a compact, durable and flexible bond that performs well during everyday movement.

For our silhouettes, this type of construction is strong, practical and technically appropriate. It allows us to keep a solid sole, good flexibility, the correct model line and comfort without unnecessary stiffness.

Strength across the full contact surface

Modern technical adhesives create a continuous, flexible bond between the upper and the sole. This solution works very well in everyday, city, motorcycle-inspired, biker, casual and ankle boot models.

When done properly, cemented construction offers strong resistance to flexing, material movement and the tension that appears during walking. It is not a compromise. It is a solid construction matched to the character of our shoes.

Modern construction without unnecessary stiffness

Traditional stitched constructions have their place in classic formal footwear. KarolShoes creates a different type of footwear: everyday, city, motorcycle-inspired, leather, ankle, casual and craft-based. For these models, modern cemented sole construction offers a strong, durable and flexible bond that works well in real use.

Why this construction fits our footwear

KarolShoes does not create stiff formal shoes for display. Our models are designed for everyday wear, riding-inspired outfits, walking, material movement and city use. They need construction that is strong but not dead, stable but not overly stiff.

Modern technical adhesive construction gives exactly this result. The upper and sole form a compact bond that distributes tension, maintains flexibility and helps keep the correct shape of the shoe. For our models, this is often more practical in real use than constructions designed mainly for classic formal shoes.

This construction is consistent with the character of the brand: natural leather, strong soles, handmade production and footwear designed to be worn, not kept in a display case.

What our construction provides

  • a strong bond between upper and sole,
  • a large sole contact surface,
  • high resistance to flexing and tension,
  • stability during everyday walking,
  • flexibility without unnecessary stiffness,
  • better fit for biker, military and casual models,
  • proper shoe profile without artificial bulk,
  • durability matched to real use.

How KarolShoes footwear is made

Making one pair involves a sequence of specific stages: leather selection, cutting, preparation of components, skiving, upper stitching, eyelets and hardware, toe puffs and counters, lasting, post-lasting finishing, hand-finishing the leather, roughing, adhesive application, heat activation, sole attachment, pressure bonding, form setting and removing the finished shoe from the last. Every stage affects the look, durability and final character of the pair.

Details that are not immediately visible

Some production details are not visible at first glance: inner reinforcements, trimming, thread finishing, preparing the sole before bonding, controlling adhesive activation temperature and setting the correct pressure time. These technical details decide whether a shoe is only attractive or genuinely well built.

Production without mass-market randomness

In mass production, the lowest cost and maximum repeatability often win. In handcrafted leather footwear, the priority is different: the right leather for the model, the right construction and control over the final result.

This is why rugged biker boots use different leather than classic Derby shoes, women’s ankle boots, sandals or slides. We apply the same logic to soles and construction. Everything has to work together: leather, shape, sole and purpose.
