How to Choose the Right Leather Shoe Size
How to Choose the Right Leather Shoe Size
Choosing the right size for handmade leather shoes should be based primarily on your actual foot length and the insole length in centimeters, not only on the size you usually wear in sneakers, sports shoes or another brand.
KarolShoes footwear has a slightly comfortable handmade fit, but the final feel also depends on foot width, instep height, sock thickness, shoe style and personal preference. This guide will help you measure your foot, read our EU, UK and US size chart, use the 1:1 foot measuring template and choose the best size before ordering made-to-order leather footwear.
Essential sizing rules
KarolShoes Size Chart
The table below shows approximate EU, UK and US size conversions together with insole length in centimeters. When choosing your size, the most important values are the insole length and your actual foot measurement.
| EU size | Approx. UK size | Approx. US size | Approx. insole length | Recommended foot length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EU 39 | UK 5.5 | US 6 | 26.5 cm | approx. 25.7–26.0 cm |
| EU 40 | UK 6.5 | US 7 | 27.0 cm | approx. 26.2–26.5 cm |
| EU 41 | UK 7 | US 7.5 | 27.5 cm | approx. 26.7–27.0 cm |
| EU 42 | UK 8 | US 8.5 | 28.0 cm | approx. 27.2–27.5 cm |
| EU 43 | UK 8.5 | US 9 | 28.5 cm | approx. 27.7–28.0 cm |
| EU 44 | UK 9.5 | US 10 | 29.0 cm | approx. 28.2–28.5 cm |
| EU 45 | UK 10.5 | US 11 | 29.5 cm | approx. 28.7–29.0 cm |
| EU 46 | UK 11.5 | US 12 | 30.0 cm | approx. 29.2–29.5 cm |
UK and US values are approximate. Size systems vary between manufacturers, so when choosing KarolShoes footwear, use the insole length in centimeters and your real foot measurement as the main reference.
Insole length is not the same as foot length
Your foot needs a small allowance inside the shoe. The toes should not touch the front while walking. For handmade leather footwear, the insole should usually be around 0.5–0.8 cm longer than your foot, depending on foot width, instep height, sock thickness and shoe style.
How to Measure Your Foot at Home
Measure your foot calmly and accurately. We recommend measuring both feet, because one foot is often slightly longer. When choosing your shoe size, use the longer measurement.
Printable 1:1 Foot Measuring Template
For greater accuracy, you can use our printable foot measuring template. Download the file, print it at 100% actual size and do not select “fit to page”, “scale to fit” or any automatic resizing option. After printing, place your foot on the template and check the suggested size.
If the printer reduces or enlarges the file, the measurement will be incorrect. Print settings are just as important as the measurement itself.

First, measure your foot in centimeters. Then compare the result with the insole length in the size chart. Do not choose your size only based on what you usually wear in sneakers, sports shoes, heavy boots or another brand.
For example, if your foot measures around 28.0 cm, it does not automatically mean that a 28.0 cm insole will be right. The shoe needs a little room at the front. In this case, the closer choice is usually a size with an insole of around 28.5 cm, which is EU 43.
If you have a wide foot, high instep or plan to wear thicker socks, leave slightly more room. If you have a narrow foot and wear thin socks, the fit may feel more secure.
Simple rule
The insole should usually be around 0.5–0.8 cm longer than your foot. This allows the foot to move naturally while walking and reduces the risk of toe pressure.
If your measurement falls exactly between two sizes, foot width, instep height, sock thickness and shoe style become important. When in doubt, use the 1:1 template or contact us before placing your order.
Fit Also Depends on the Shoe Model
Different types of footwear feel different on the foot. The same size may feel different in Derby shoes, Chelsea-style boots, ankle boots, motorcycle-style boots, sandals or slides. This is normal because each style has a different upper shape, instep area, heel structure and sole construction.
Ankle boots and Chelsea-style boots
Ankle boots may initially feel more secure because they hold the foot around the ankle and instep. Before judging the size, loosen the laces or open the zipper and check whether the foot has the correct length and enough toe room.
Motorcycle-style and biker boots
Motorcycle-style and biker-inspired models usually have a stronger construction, higher upper and more solid sole. They may need a short break-in period while the leather adjusts to the foot. They should not, however, press on the toes or feel too short.
Leather Derby shoes
Leather Derby shoes should hold the heel and instep well, but the front of the foot should not feel compressed. In classic and smart casual shoes, insole length and comfort during foot flexion are especially important.
Sandals and slides
In sandals and slides, the foot is more visible, so an oversized fit can look unnatural more quickly. At the same time, toes and heel should not extend beyond the sole outline. Foot length and insole length remain the best references.
Do not rely only on your sneaker size
Sports shoes and sneakers often use different sizing, softer uppers, different internal volume and more space at the front. Handmade leather shoes have a different construction and work differently on the foot. Your sneaker size will not always be the correct size in KarolShoes footwear.
How to Check the Size After Delivery
After receiving your order, try the shoes on indoors, on a clean and soft surface. Do not judge the size after quickly putting your foot in without loosening the laces or opening the zipper. Leather shoes, especially ankle boots and motorcycle-style models, should be put on calmly so the foot sits correctly inside the shoe.
Check that your toes do not touch the front, that the heel does not slip excessively and that the instep is not too tight. A leather shoe may feel firmer at first, but it should not be too short.
Try them on carefully
- try shoes on a clean, soft surface,
- loosen the laces or open the zipper,
- wear the socks you plan to use with the shoes,
- check the toe room,
- check the instep and heel,
- do not wear the shoes outside if you are unsure about the size.
Common Sizing Mistakes
Most sizing issues do not come from the size chart itself, but from the measuring method. An incorrectly printed template, measuring the foot on a soft carpet, relying only on old shoes or choosing a size “by eye” can lead to poor fit.
The safest approach is to measure your foot in the evening or after a few hours of activity, because the foot may be slightly larger than in the morning. Measure while wearing the socks you plan to use with that type of footwear.
What to avoid
- printing the template with “fit to page”,
- measuring your foot on a soft carpet,
- measuring only one foot,
- choosing size only by sneaker size,
- using an old stretched shoe insole as the only reference,
- choosing a size without toe allowance,
- ignoring foot width and instep height,
- assuming every model will fit exactly the same.
What If You Are Between Two Sizes?
If your measurement falls between two sizes, do not decide based only on length. Consider foot width, instep height, sock thickness and the type of model.
With a wide foot, high instep or thicker socks, the larger size may be safer. With a very narrow foot and thinner socks, the larger size may feel too loose. In this case, compare your result with the 1:1 template or contact us before buying.
Before ordering, check
- the length of both feet,
- the longer foot measurement,
- the insole length in the size chart,
- whether you wear thin or thick socks,
- whether your foot is wide,
- whether your instep is high,
- which type of model you are choosing,
- whether the template was printed at 100% scale.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose my KarolShoes size?
First, measure your foot length from the heel to the longest toe, ideally for both feet. Then compare the result with the insole length in our size chart. The insole should usually be around 0.5–0.8 cm longer than your foot.
Is insole length the same as foot length?
No. Insole length should be longer than your foot length. Your foot needs a small allowance at the front so your toes do not touch the end of the shoe while walking.
How much extra room should leather shoes have?
In most cases, around 0.5–0.8 cm difference between foot length and insole length works well. A wide foot, high instep or thicker sock may require a little more room.
Do KarolShoes sizes run large?
KarolShoes footwear has a slightly comfortable handmade fit, so you should not choose size only based on sneakers or another brand. The most important references are your foot measurement and the insole length in centimeters.
Can I use my sneaker size as a reference?
Not as the only reference. Sneakers often have a different construction and different sizing. For handmade leather footwear, it is best to use your foot length and the insole length shown in the table.
How should I print the foot measuring template?
Print the template at 100% actual size, without “fit to page”, “scale to fit” or “shrink to printable area”. If the printer changes the scale, the measurement may be incorrect.
Should I measure one foot or both feet?
Measure both feet. One foot is often slightly longer than the other. Choose your size using the measurement of the longer foot.
What should I do if I am between two sizes?
If you are between two sizes, consider foot width, instep height, sock thickness and the model type. With a wide foot or high instep, the larger size may be safer.
Will leather shoes stretch in length?
Natural leather may gradually adapt in width and upper flexibility, but you should not assume the shoe will become significantly longer with wear. The length must be correct from the beginning.
Does a wide foot need a larger size?
Sometimes. If your foot is wide or your instep is high, a larger size may provide more comfort. However, the shoe should not be too long or allow the foot to slide too much.
Does every model fit the same?
No. Derby shoes, Chelsea-style boots, motorcycle-style boots, ankle boots, sandals and slides have different constructions. The same size can feel different depending on the style.
What if the leather shoes feel firm at first?
Leather shoes can feel firmer at first, especially ankle boots, Chelsea-style boots and motorcycle-style boots. The leather will gradually work and adapt to the foot, but the shoe should not press on the toes or feel too short.
Can I measure the insole from old shoes?
You can use it as an additional reference, but not as the only one. Old shoes may be stretched, worn in, built differently or have a different usable internal length. Measuring your actual foot is safer.
How should I choose size for thicker socks?
If you plan to wear thicker socks, measure your foot while wearing those socks. A thicker sock may require slightly more room inside the shoe.
